This qualitative research study documents the use of both art therapy and cognitive therapy combined as a therapeutic modality. Three separate group art therapy interventions are examined that focus on self-perception, personal transition and willingness to change. One individual case study, using both art therapy and cognitive therapy as a therapeutic modality, is also examined. The study took place over a period of six months in an intensive outpatient adult psychiatric hospital treatment program.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This research will support studies in art therapy and cognitive therapy that indicate that there is measurable conformity in human response to certain images or symbols, and that human beings have an innate ability to express themselves through image making. Results of the research will demonstrate that integrating art therapy and cognitive therapy in brief psychiatric treatment was effective in encouraging self-discovery and emotional growth in clients.
