The purpose of this study was to compare student success and retention rates in distance and traditional learning in the South Carolina Technical College System. Technical and community colleges are competing for students and to win, must offer their students better products and a higher quality service. South Carolina higher education institutions must attract and retain students in the same manner that businesses attract and retain customers. The researcher conducted this study to compare the academic success of students in distance learning and traditional education business and information technology courses. A comparative analysis was performed on randomized samples collected from the South Carolina College Enrollment Reporting System (CERS), which consists of 16 colleges. Data were derived from several computer and business courses during fall and spring semesters 2002, 2003, and 2004. The data were merged into SPSS and Microsoft Excel for further analysis. As distance learning courses continues to grow, technical college instructors must maintain the quality of instruction and high standards that is equivalent to the traditional classroom course setting. As a result, the findings of this research concluded that there was a statistical significant difference in student success and retention rates between distance and traditional learning students. Traditional learning students statistically had higher retention success rates compared to distance learning students. The most noteworthy effect of this study revolved around gender, age, and race which were statistically significant on student achievement. Finally, further research is needed to better understand the relationships and other issues that positively and negatively impact student success, retention and failure in distance learning and traditional learning courses.
