How do heterosexual men and women project and secure their sexual identities in the context of gay and lesbian visibility? And how do these identity practices vary by race and gender? Based on sixty in-depth interviews with heterosexual Black and White men and women, I show that heterosexual identity practices and practices of homophobia and anti-homophobia are central to the boundaries heterosexuals establish in projecting and securing their sexual identity and privilege. Gay and lesbian visibility in everyday life means that more homosexual men and women have come out and are a visible presence in workplaces, people's families and friendship circles. As a result, heterosexual identity practices are established through negotiating the degree of interaction, tolerance and acceptance that heterosexuals will extend to gay and lesbian individuals in everyday life. As heterosexual status is a marker of privilege and normality and as homosexuality is still variously stigmatized to lesser or greater degrees, the boundaries heterosexuals construct both demonstrate their conscious securing of a heterosexual identity and the changing status and growing tolerance of homosexuals in the United States.

520 $a In addition, I explore the gendered and racial meanings of these practices for heterosexual Black and White men and women, illustrating how Blackness is associated with heterosexuality while Whiteness is increasingly associated with homosexuality. The gendered nature of heterosexual identity is clearly seen through men's reliance on strong to weak forms of homophobia and gender conventionality to project their identity status while heterosexual women rely on conventions of femininity and weak forms of homophobia at best to secure their identity. In the conclusion, I illustrate the importance of understanding heterosexual identities relationally.
