The purpose of this study is to explore what influences baccalaureate nurse educators to choose whether or not to utilize long-term care facilities as clinical sites. A substantive theory was generated that explains the impact on nurse educator's choosing behaviors. The research was set up as a qualitative study with grounded theory utilized as the research design. The qualitative data included interviews of 14 baccalaureate nurse educators from four nursing programs in southwest Idaho and eastern Oregon.

Through in depth naturalistic inquiry, a grounded theory of Seeking Job Satisfaction was derived that explained how the participant's personal reality of long-term care facilities and their need for job satisfaction influenced these 14 nurse educators' choices in choosing clinical sites. These nurse educators developed perceptions stemming from their personal experiences with long-term care facilities leading to preference in their choosing behaviors of clinical sites. Professional autonomy in choosing clinical sites in their nursing programs enabled them to satisfy their needs for job satisfaction. This emergent theory supports and is supported by Choice Theory and Self Theory, along with other needs satisfaction concepts in the literature.

This study provides a foundation for future research aimed at addressing additional research related to nursing faculty job satisfaction in other areas of clinical teaching assignments. Other areas to explore are psychological, sociological, and personality variables that may also affect nurse educator job satisfaction.

Nurse educators who are more satisfied with their academic profession may engage in their work with greater joy and accomplishment. Consequently, student learning may be enhanced and the nursing profession will reap the rewards with more highly qualified graduates. This research is especially needed at a time when faculty retention is crucial to maintain quality nursing programs and deliver competent and compassionate care to our elderly in long-term care facilities across the nation.
