Subjective and objective measures of voice quality are important for diagnosing and treating voice disorders. There are several limitations to using subjective measures alone, and currently available objective measures have not been proven to correlate consistently with human perception. The purpose of this research was to determine how well the Automated Psychoacoustics-based Voice-quality Assessment (APVA), a computer-based system for objectively measuring the level of the noise components in human voice, correlates with auditory perceptual judgments by human listeners of the overall severity of dysphonia in both sustained vowels and sentences produced by speakers with normal and disordered voice. Results indicate that signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) measures calculated by APVA are significantly correlated with perceptual judgments of overall severity of dysphonia for vowels (r = 0.808; r2= 0.653; p < 0.001), but not for sentences (r = 0.389; r2 = 0.1514, p = 0.137). Future research will focus on improving the correlation between APVA-SNR measures for connected speech and listener judgments.
