Thesis (Ph.D.)--Tufts University, 1993.
The appearance of a Doppelganger or Double in a work of fiction, symbolizes an exploration of the nature of the self and self-perception, not only on an individual level, but of the individual in a larger context of social role and responsibility. Starting with Antonin Artaud's notion of the "Theatre" and its "Double" as a metaphor for the relationship between the essence (shadow/double) of an art form and the culture which produced it, the Double and its Theatre recasts this relationship in the juncture of character and actor, and more importantly, the motif of dramatic characters whose exist as doubles within their own world of the play. The Double presages disharmony, entropy, and approaching chaos in terms of character, theme, and events. The variety of approaches to the study of the double--psychological, historical, anthropological--presents a good case for considering the universality of Doubling as an exploration of inherent human duality and the conflict between perception and cognition, lifting it beyond the realm of a literary device, making it significant as a expression of a cultural form--the duality in man in terms of perceiver/perceived, subject/object relations, etc.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Previous studies of doubling have not considered the "special qualities" of dramatic literature apart from other forms (the novel and short story). They have not taken into consideration the special nature of the drama as being a template or score for performance--a structural "double" or "skeletal reflection" of the performance on which it is based. This imaginary world, existing in the mind of the audience, created by the playwright and given meaning by all the conventions of theatrical performance, is a fictional world inhabited by "real" people, that is, live actors that will embody and present the characters sketched by the play text.

This study will attempt to reveal, through structural analysis, and utilizing concepts drawn from semiotics, genre theory, psychology, and sociology, the signification process by which Doubles operate in the text and are intended to affect an audience in three major works of dramatic literature: Beckett's Writing for Godot, Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors, and Euripides' The Bacchae.
