Two nerve control sources, one natural and one transferred, were compared to determine their efficacy in controlling a hands-free EMG-Electrolarynx device. The subject underwent a total laryngectomy, which included the transfer of his recurrent laryngeal nerve to host muscles on one side of his neck. It was hypothesized the transferred side would be a better control source, as it is more highly correlated with vocal intent. Performance was similar for both sides, with the naturally-innervated side performing slightly better. Possible reasons for the performances are discussed, as are goals for future research.
