The purpose of this study was to examine temporal effects of semantic-categorical and phonological relationships on naming processes in young normal individuals, older normal individuals, and aphasic individuals. The picture-word interference paradigm was used with visually presented words that bore either a semantic, phonological, or no relationship to the picture. These words were presented at varying times relative to the presentation of target pictures. The influence of these different types of relationships was determined by analyzing the normal groups' naming reaction times, and analyzing the aphasic group's naming reaction times and naming errors.

Twenty young normal individuals (M&barbelow; = 21.05), 20 older normal individuals (M&barbelow; = 58.1), and 11 aphasic individuals (M&barbelow; = 61.75) participated. Aphasic individuals presented with relatively preserved semantic knowledge, phonological processing level deficits, and word retrieval deficits.

Twenty-five nouns were chosen as stimuli. The conditions included a semantic condition (e.g., sheep - PIG), a phonological condition (e.g., pill - PIG), and an unrelated condition (e.g., knife - PIG). SOAs were set at -300ms, +300ms, 0ms (i.e., words were presented 300ms before or after the picture, or simultaneously with the picture, respectively).

The data were submitted to repeated measures ANOVAs. All three groups performed similarly in terms of the pattern of effects found over the course of naming: early semantic interference effects, mid-semantic interference effects, and mid-phonological facilitation effects were found. Group comparisons between the normal control groups and between the matched-control and aphasic groups also revealed similar patterns of effects. Contrary to predictions, the aphasic group did not demonstrate either slowed or reduced patterns of activation during naming. Rather, the pattern of effects found in all three groups was most consistent with cascade models.

The results from the aphasic word interference naming errors revealed significantly more NRs than unrelated errors, competitor errors, and phonological errors. Additionally, significantly more semantic errors, unrelated errors, and competitor errors were produced relative to phonological errors. These errors appeared to a result of the word interference task. In terms of the pattern of naming errors by condition, the aphasic group demonstrated semantic interference effects but no phonological facilitation effects.
