There is an underrepresentation of African Americans in educational leadership. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the lived experiences and perspective of African American administrators who have served successfully in a public school district in central Florida. The study determined characteristics, perceptions, experiences, and strategies employed by the participants. Composite descriptions were developed and synthesized to reveal a common description of the 28 significant experiences and characteristics. The most significant findings were that the successful African American educators in this study were first-generation educators who attributed their success to positive experiences in their own early educational experiences and support from their neighborhood, community, school district, and family. Implications from this study suggest that encouraging African Americans to pursue educational fields early in their developmental stage could help increase the pool of qualified educational leaders. By going beyond the historiographically constructed patterns of dominance and marginality, an increase in African American educational leaders may provide a greater voice in enacting positive social change in schools. As long as African Americans are marginalized in educational leadership positions, they will not play a significant role in initiating institutional change. This diminishes their power and responsibility to enact social change. Strong role models may persuade young African Americans with potential to enter educational careers.
