Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Fullerton, 2006.
This thesis demonstrates that there was more to the thirty-seventh President, Richard Nixon, than the Watergate scandal. The main argument addresses Richard Nixon and civil rights. With an unwillingness of many historians to examine Nixon as a reformer and a gap in the historical record for Nixon's pre-presidential years, the field is wide open for research in this area. There are five major parts in the thesis that demonstrate that Richard Nixon was active in the field of civil rights from the early 1940s to 1960.

First, a brief historiography is given to familiarize the reader with the literature and schools of thought on Richard Nixon and civil rights. Second, Richard Nixon's philosophy is discussed as is his childhood and early years in Congress (1946-1952). Nixon's voting record regarding civil rights is highlighted. Third, Richard Nixon was the chairman of the President's Committee on Government Contracts which was a committee that attempted to end work-place discrimination, beginning with government contracts. Fourth, Richard Nixon was an honorary member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, which stirred up controversy during his tenure as Vice President. Finally, Richard Nixon was president of the Senate during a tumultuous time that saw the first civil rights legislation in over eighty years. In conclusion, this thesis demonstrates that Richard Nixon was active in the field of civil rights. Research was conducted at the National Archives that houses Nixon's pre-Presidential papers and at the Nixon Library.
