The relationship between Africans and African Americans is one that is demanding greater attention as the numbers of Africans coming to America is increasing. The two groups have never been physically closer, yet they continue to socialize in completely different societies, choosing to self-segregate rather than interact on any meaningful level. The question is with the increase in African immigration to America, how will the arrival of Africans to this country since the 1980s impact Africa and African American interactions as well as African American identity?

With its large and diverse African American and African populations, the demographics in the Washington, DC area make the region prime for study. A survey and interviews were conducted in order to gauge the perceptions and level of interactions among Africans and African Americans in the Washington, DC area. Government documents as well as secondary data were reviewed.

The study showed that African immigration to America since the 1980s is bringing to the surface increased tensions between Africans and African Americans. Wounds buried deep in the history of the two groups are being reopened. Differences in educational and economic achievement are also behind increased competition for resources between the two groups. While there are significant areas of cooperation, the tensions between the two groups are reaching a boiling point.

The study showed that the relationship between the two groups in the Washington, D.C. area play out differently than it does in other parts of the country. There is evidence of better relations between the two groups in the region and greater levels of interaction. The issue that promises to be a divisive one, however, is that of identity. The research shows that as questions over who can claim an African American identity arise, room will have to made for African immigrants. To not do so would not only mean further divisions, but also a divide in Black political power in this country. The debate of just who and what is African American is therefore beginning and subsequent generations of Black immigrants promise to change old notions of what it means to be Black in America.
