Parenting styles and socialization goals of young mothers: The role of cultural context.

Thesis (Ph.D.)--Tufts University, 2006.
This study examined the relations between cultural context and parenting, with a focus on the parenting styles and socialization goals of young mothers. Participants were 313 first-time teenage mothers. Results indicate that three distinct parenting styles emerged; "democratic", "strict", and "directive." Each parenting style was highly related to maternal race/ethnicity, with European-American mothers more highly represented in the democratic parenting group, African American women with a higher representation in the strict parenting group than other groups, and Latina mothers more highly represented in the directive parenting group. Socialization goals were related to parenting style, with democratic and strict mothers placing more emphasis on independence, respectful behavior, and friendliness in their children, and directive mothers placing more emphasis on the importance of education. Mothers with a democratic parenting style emphasized emotional and physical health to a higher degree than the mothers with strict or directive parenting styles. Results are situated within current research about adolescent parenting, cultural context, and the confound between race and income. The discussion also raises questions about the cultural appropriateness of the parenting measures used in this study, especially for Latina mothers.
