This study examined the level of training and attitudes toward training that the doctors, nurses, and ancillary staff have received in regard to customer service, interpretation services, and cultural sensitivity. This study measured the differences between Spanish speaking and English-speaking patients, and the frequency of visits to the emergency department (ED) in relation to patient satisfaction with services provided by health care workers in the emergency department. Furthermore, the study examined doctors, nurses, and ancillary staff attitudes regarding the limited-English-speaking population. In addition, the study examined doctors, nurses, and ancillary staff training and their comfort level and the challenges that they encounter when working with limited-English-speaking patients.

The major findings from the study indicate that the Spanish-speaking patients are less satisfied than English-speaking patients with the emergency department overall services. Additional results suggest that the longer employees have worked in the profession, the more they feel that training in cultural sensitivity, interpretation services, and customer service would be useful. Findings also indicate that White staff members reported to receive more training than minority staff members. However, there is no difference between the training received by gender and language spoken.
