Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Toledo, 2003.
The purposes of this study were to assess the perceived continuing education needs of a national group of practicing vascular nurses caring for patients with peripheral arterial disease, determine the preferred method of delivery of continuing education, and to identify vascular nurses' perceived barriers to obtaining continuing education about peripheral arterial disease. A four page, 63-item survey was developed to assess the perceived continuing education needs of vascular nurses caring for patients with peripheral arterial disease. Principal components analysis was conducted and five factors were retained based on item factor loadings of ≥.50. Subsequent analyses were based on these five factors.

Using a three wave mailing technique the survey was mailed to a national population of 605 vascular nurses. A total of 451 (74.9%) responded. The majority of respondents were female, white, with Bachelor of Science Degrees in Nursing aged 40--49 years. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, Pearson product moment correlations, multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA), and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were used for the statistical analyses.

The results of the study indicated that 30% of the respondents perceived they needed extensive education or considerably more education on the following educational items: determine emerging PAD risk factors, design an individualized exercise program, use current lipid lowering guidelines, assess functional status using health related quality of life tools, provide patient with target exercise goals, analyze effects of lipid lowering medications on laboratory parameters, and use current hypertension treatment guidelines. There was a significant difference between the perceived continuing education needs of nurses based on years as a vascular nurse and job position. Nurses with less vascular experience had significantly higher perceived learning needs on educational items related to PAD Assessment and Detection. Nurse manager/supervisors/directors and staff nurses/clinicians had higher perceived learning needs on the Assessment and Detection Factor when compared to advanced practice nurses. Other findings demonstrated a significant relationship between attendance at educational programs and four of the five factors. Nurses who attended fewer educational programs in the past two years had higher continuing education needs. Results showed a significant correlation between factor scores and number of memberships in professional organizations. Nurses with fewer memberships had higher scores on educational items.
