This dissertation examines the relationship between female activism and confessional identity in early modern France. The thought and work of Vincent de Paul, a Catholic reformer, provide an historical example of how religious values shaped confessional identity for Catholics in seventeenth-century France. Charitable activity became a defining characteristic of Catholic identity for early modern French Catholics, and such work provided women with an important public role in the Catholic Church.

The extant letters, conferences and documents of Vincent de Paul were analyzed, as they illustrate the integral religious values that influenced his poverty relief efforts. Because de Paul insisted that charity was a non-negotiable aspect of religious faith, he and his associates became involved with a myriad of projects, including healthcare for the poor, care of the elderly and the mentally ill, prison reform, and the education and vocational training of children. The enormous scope of this charitable relief work demanded a large body of able workers, and this in turn led to the development of leadership opportunities and public roles for women within Catholicism. As the need for charitable assistance increased, the potential for female activism increased and this activism led to the conclusion that charity and reform were necessary expressions of religious faith.
