Thesis (Ph.D.)--Luther Seminary, 2006.
This dissertation is a character study of the crowd in the Gospel of Mark exploring the function of the character of the crowd in the narrative and the response the characterization generates. It uses a reader-oriented methodology that is sensitive to the nature of characterization as the product of the interaction of the reader and the text, and that is attentive to the literary, cultural, and social forces at play for a reader/audience in the first century Greco-Roman world. This methodology examines the character of the crowd in relation to the plot, in relation to the other characters in the narrative, and with the cumulative effect of the character in mind. The remains of the literary and cultural record of the era and sources on the probable knowledge of a first century reader/audience are also explored.

This dissertation is a character study of the crowd in the Gospel of Mark exploring the function of the character of the crowd in the narrative and the response the characterization generates. This methodology examines the character of the crowd in relation to the plot, in relation to the other characters in the narrative, and with the cumulative effect of the character in mind. This study proposes that the crowd is a common and important character in ancient Greco-Roman literature and suggests that this is indicative of the significant role of the crowd in ancient social, religious, and civic life. It also proposes that the role of the character of the crowd in the Gospel of Mark is essential to the telling of Mark's story of Jesus, especially in relation to the pervasive plot of conflict in the gospel. The crowd functions as a witness and audience for the deeds and words of Jesus, seeks out and receives his help and healing, helps to facilitate the plot, serves as an advocate and agent for Jesus, makes pronouncements about the significance of what it has witnessed, provides for the needs of Jesus and his disciples including protection, and acts as a model of faith. The crowd also disappoints by turning against Jesus in the climax of the narrative.

This dissertation also explores the response generated by the character of the crowd by focus on the close relationship of the crowd with Jesus and his help for those who suffer, the words spoken by the crowd and their impact on understanding the identity and significance of Jesus, the relationship of the crowd to the other characters, and the ultimate failure of the crowd to follow Jesus and help in his time of need. The emotional impact of the crowd's betrayal of Jesus on the reader/audience is also explored.

Finally, this dissertation examines how this proposed characterization of the crowd, its function, and response generated compares to the character of the crowd in the wider universe of Greco-Roman literature. It suggests that the character of the crowd in Mark is comparable and consistent with the portrayal of the crowd throughout ancient Greco-Roman literature and that an early reader/audience would have readily recognized such a characterization and its significance, responding in a way dependent on the social standing of the reader/audience.
