While some attention has been given to risky sexual behaviors (RSBs) among black female adolescents, much has not been done on the effects of parental, peer, and community relationships on RSBs in this population. Taking into consideration the fact that social relationships have much impacts on behaviors, this dissertation examines how parental, peer, and community relationships influence RSBs among black female adolescents. It also assessed which social relationships had the strongest effect on RSBs as well as the differences among black female and male adolescents in RSBs and their determinants.

520 $a Using social capital theory as the theoretical framework, this study tests the effects of factors related to parental relationships (rules and decisions, closeness, and attending religious events), peer relationships (socializing with female friends, socializing with male friends, and conversing with friends), community relationships (feelings about community, and contacts with people in the neighborhood) on RSBs, holding motivations for sex, schooling, education about risky behaviors and perceived risks of pregnancy and AIDS constant.
520 $a The data come from the National Longitudinal Adolescents Health Survey (Add Health), and a sample of 1,595 black adolescents including 839 females and 756 males are selected for the analysis. Logistic regression is the main method of data analysis method. The analysis was conducted separately for females and males and compared with an emphasis on black female adolescents.
520 $a The results show that black female respondents who are given more autonomy by their parents are more likely to have sex than those who have less autonomy, while attending a religious event with a parental figure also proves to be an important aspect of parental relationship that increases engagement in sex.
520 $a This study has contributed to a better understanding of the often complex relationships between social relationships and RSBs among black female adolescents. The use of social capital theory has allowed for a well-needed perspective on RSBs among black female adolescents. Findings from this study will provide policy makers with some insights as they try to develop policies to lower and to ultimately eradicate the high rates of HIV/AIDS, other STDs, and unplanned/unwanted pregnancies among the black female adolescent population.
