Thesis (Ph.D.)--New York University, 2008.
This study explores the lived experiences of black male college students attending GU, a predominantly white private university in the northeast. The participants regularly attend meetings of campus based support groups that target black males. This study attempts to understand the relationship between social support, student engagement, and academic persistence. Individual characteristics i.e. ethnicity, socio-economic background, and high school experiences may impact the tendency of some black males to seek out support among individuals who share physical characteristics. Three rounds of in depth-interviews with 12 black male undergraduate students gleaned rich data detailing stories of their lived experiences on campus, support structures they find helpful, and suggestions for improved support.
