The purpose of this study was to investigate the challenges that graduate students in higher education encounter during their research experience. The researcher surveyed 17 classes that consisted of primarily graduate students within the College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) at a midwestern university.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the challenges that graduate students in higher education encounter during their research experience. The results of the study indicated a statistically significant relationship between the students' research preparation and their research knowledge. Statistical significance was also found in the relationship between the research resources available to students and their research preparation. Conclusions resulting from the study include: (a) the preparers of educational researchers need to place greater emphasis on the literature review and the methods sections of the research; and (b) priority should be given to improving all aspect of the research process. This will in turn lead to higher quality research activities which could ultimately improve the research ranking of the university.
