The purpose of this investigation was to study the educational response of San Cristobal de las Casas to tourism, through examining the instructional programs affected by the presence of tourism, within the context of the Chiapan culture. Naturalistic Inquiry, an ethnographic methodology, was seen as the most suitable means for examining the interplay between education and tourism in the Mexican tourist center.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Using previous studies on tourism and impact, questions were designed as guidelines for the data gathering, and adapted when necessary on site, utilizing interviews, documents and observations as resources. After the information was compiled, the summaries of each source were analyzed and compared with each other to determine common trends or interrelated factors.

The educational service most influenced was the new hotel management program at the Centro de Bachillerato Tecnologico-Industrial, a vocational secondary institution. The program's efficacy was hampered by political turnovers, a scarcity of relevant resources and materials, and an inability to provide more practical experience. The English classes emphasized in the program, did not provide competency in the language in spite of its perceived desirability. Instruction time was limited by the absences and nonpunctuality of students and teachers, and, the interruptions by strikes. Education costs have risen due to a national inflation.

Tourism did not noticeably affect grade level attainment, social class and location were the important factors. Women were strongly represented in the hotel management program and in the hotel management field in San Cristobal. None of the observed graduates became hotel managers upon graduation and few continued in tourism, although many went on in school. Reasons were given for this discrepancy.

The majority of tourists that visit San Cristobal are of the "explorer" category. Missionaries and researchers are considered tourists by many of the natives. Hippies are seen as a negative influence especially in the area of drugs. The Indians in the area are affected economically by tourism through the craft industry, and in some social patterns, such as the increase in aggressiveness of the women vendors. The decentralization of the tourism industry and the type of tourist has minimized negative effects.
