This study investigates the concept of Heimat in German author Arnold Stadler's poetry and early prose fiction. In contrast to much politically charged recent writing and thinking on Heimat, Stadler conceives of a metaphysical view of home. While his oeuvre interacts with the long cultural history of Heimat by depicting the traditional tropes and motives long associated with Heimatliteratur, Stadler contends that such imagery represents only the surface of a much more complex construct. The two concepts of desire and transitoriness determine the development of Stadler's writings, both of which find representation in a Heimat that does not allow for the resolution of the tension between them. The productive elements of desire associated with creating a Heimat stand in stark contrast to the nullifying characteristic of transitoriness represented by death and departure.

This study considers the construction of Heimat with regard to objects, both animate and inanimate, photographs, political entities, institutions, and language, paying particular attention to the attempts at permanency the characters seek and associate with these elements, which contrast with the fleeting nature of family bonds, speech, and individual lives. The philosophy of Martin Heidegger plays a significant role, as both an accepted and rejected means for understanding being and the relationship between existence and home. Beyond this, utopian and theological philosophies of Ernst Bloch, postcolonialism, and theories of time, place, and death provide the underpinnings for interpreting Stadler's writings.

This study reads Stadler's work as a reaction to developments in Germany, such as the expansion of the European Union, the Heimat wave following Edgar Reitz's film series in the 1980s, and German reunification. The interpretation also reflects larger changes in culture, including globalization and multiculturalism. Stadler's views on Heimat depart from the more political implications of recent thinking on Heimat by placing the concept in a metaphysical framework, extending the perceived boundaries of home and accepting the implications of this major expansion. No fixed model of Heimat exists, thus leaving the desire for Heimat to combat the inevitably transitory nature of an imagined home.
