Thesis (M.A.)--Texas Woman's University, 2007.
This thesis aims to examine the impact of the merger of "high" and "low" art in contemporary culture as represented, respectively, by the work of Toni Morrison and Oprah Winfrey. It is intended to demonstrate how The Oprah Winfrey Show creates a space that disallows for the exploration and interrogation of themes that are clearly central to Morrison's work as an artist: the legacy of slavery, institutionalized racism, white supremacy, and patriarchy. I argue that The Oprah Winfrey Show and Oprah's Book Club create spaces that de-emphasize both race and gender politics, and that this compromises both the political and aesthetic nature of Morrison's work. In short, my claim is that, via an almost exclusive focus on female experience and the stereotypically related realms of emotion and sentimentality, Winfrey's co-optation of Morrison results in a de-racialization and thus a de-politicization of Morrison's work.
