Thesis (D.Min.)--Drew University, 2007.
Abundance is a powerful theme in both Christian and Native American spirituality. Bacone College, a college founded in 1880 for Native American students by the American Baptist Church, reflects both Christian and Native American cultures. This project casts the work of fundraising at Bacone College in terms of both Biblical and Native American traditions of abundance. It holds in a dialectic the traditions of American Baptist Christianity and the diverse American Indian traditions that have shaped the complex identity of Bacone College. This paper considers the roles of the fear of scarcity and the spirituality of abundance in the history of Bacone College, from its founding to the current day, with an eye toward its future. The role of American Indian casinos is discussed from diverse Native American and Christian perspectives, taking into account their mixed implications for material abundance, spiritual abundance, health, and community well-being. The Thesis also examines the role of Native American Art at Bacone College and describes the importance of the Bacone School and fundraising for continuation of this tradition. Finally, the project of fundraising in this multicultural community is evaluated in terms of its practical effectiveness, its place in the life of the community, and its meaning in a theology of abundance.Subjects--Topical Terms:
