Christian Fundamentalists in the American South have largely publicly abandoned biblical arguments to support racial segregation. Nevertheless, references to the Fundamentalist view of interracial marriage continue to be a part of contemporary social, cultural, and political discussion. Southern Christian Fundamentalist support for racial segregation and against interracial dating and marriage has not been analyzed in depth.

This work argues that Christian Fundamentalists in the mid-twentieth century South had viewed racial separation as based on cultural tradition, leading southern Fundamentalists to develop a more explicitly announced biblical foundation to support the continuation of the tradition just as challenges against racial separation increased and then even more recently, contrary to the doctrine of biblical immutability, to abandon openly the biblical foundation only as interracial relationships became more widely accepted in southern society. The thesis has been developed primarily by analyzing works of Fundamentalist authors, sermons delivered by Fundamentalist preachers, and court records involving challenges to Fundamentalist practices.
