This study looks at how space is addressed in fine art today. The concept of technology is influential in the development of art, and digital media becomes an important factor in space representation in art today. Historically, the representation of space has been at the heart of fine art. Recent developments in digital technology have allowed for interactive "spaces" to become more common place in contemporary society. In light of these new spatial understandings, artists are creating venues of spatial interrogation through both digital spaces and physical spaces via installation art. These artworks present unique spatial relationships, often creating situations that are "immersive." How have experiences made available through digital technology influenced a rise in immersive installation art today?

This study looks at theories pertaining to aesthetic experience, perception, and critical theories about the concept of technological development, including the ideas of Herbert Marcuse, Martin Heidegger, and Friedrich Nietzsche. Theorists such as these have suggested that the concept of technological development fostered an instrumental rationality in society that put aside any metaphysical understanding through technological development. This study purports that the presence of immersive installation art represents a reintroduction of metaphysical understanding that is fostered by the development of technological creations, specifically digital representation.

Technological tools available today allow for experiences of "space" to be redefined through virtual spaces in digital venues. Installation artists also create spaces that allow for the interrogation of perception, presenting the virtuality of real space. This study suggests that these types of installation spaces have developed into a genre in fine art today---Immersive Installation Art.

This study compares works of digital artists such as Char Davies, Paul Sermon and Michael Rovner, to works of installation artists such as Richard Wilson, Olafur Eliasson, James Turrell, and others. An important focus is the relationship of the concept of technology to the ontological aims of a scientifically oriented society. Also addressed are educational implications of these fine art experiences through the ideas of Alain Badiou and others. These immersive spaces act as venues for the examination of space, identity and metaphysical understanding in a technologically oriented society.
