The first part of this dissertation is an attempt to trace the development of Tillich's theology of culture. Here, I aim to clarify some significant shifts between his early theology of culture and late by outlining both of them. In chapter I, I will briefly analyze Tillich's early theology of culture, where Tillich tries to reconcile culture with religion by seeking a creative synthesis between culture and religion with a concept of "theonomy." Chapter II includes a brief examination of Tillich's later theology of culture that brings into focus the predicament of all cultural creations. Here, culture appears as the fallen situation that must be overcome by religion.

In the second part of this dissertation, I explore Tillich's theology of the Church that is based on his later theology of culture, particularly in the third volume of Systematic Theology. Chapter III includes an examination of both questions raised from life (or human existence) and the religious answers from Christian symbols., following the method of correlation. In chapter IV, I analyze Tillich's understanding of the relation between the Church and religious symbolic communities (the Spiritual Community and the Kingdom of God) and between the Church and Culture (cultural and other religious communities). In chapter V, I identify both Tillich's contributions to the issue of the relation between religion and culture, and more particularly, between the Church and culture, and the limitations of his theology of the Church. Then I present a constructive suggestion which points beyond Tillich's own treatment, namely, the necessity of a more positive view of culture. I attempt to point out how a more positive view of culture might play a significant role in both challenging and transforming not only the Church, but also the world in which we live.
