Many studies have been conducted on leadership and change; however the primary focus of these studies was on the need for effective leadership to make change initiatives successful. There is little evidence that many instruments exist to gather data directly related to leader traits and leadership competencies necessary for leaders to be successful during major organizational change. The focus of this study is transformational leadership as it affects the implementation of change.

The purpose of this study is to identify the important traits and competencies for change leaders in Egyptian organizations, and to rank order them from the perspective of Egyptian experts, leaders and followers in these organizations. The study also compares between the Egyptian and American experts, leaders and followers to research the impact of culture on the perception of change leaders' traits and competencies. The outcome of the study is a profile of traits and competencies necessary for transformational leaders of organizations that undergo second order change, specifically in Egypt.
