The current study explored job search behaviors and attitudes of graduate students and the effects of a networking skills intervention. Seventy-five graduate students from a variety of disciplines in two universities participated. The first objective was to understand how level of Extraversion based on the NEO-PI-R related to job search intensity, networking intensity, networking comfort, and job search self-efficacy. The total score of Extraversion, as well as the six facet scores that make up the Extraversion domain, were examined. A second objective was to understand how a two-hour training intervention on Effective Networking Skills might impact these behaviors and attitudes, and to discern if there were differences in the types of networking strategies preferred by introverts and extraverts.

Results revealed some important findings. In the total sample, there was a positive relationship between Extraversion, and the facet of Warmth in particular, and networking comfort in graduate students. Analyses indicated that participation in the training intervention appeared to contribute to higher levels of networking intensity and job search self-efficacy in all participants in the study, regardless of personality type. There were significant differences between introverts and extraverts in the types of strategies that they preferred to use when networking in a search. Lastly, the networking training was well-received, and participants felt strongly that the seminar was helpful to their job search and that they would recommend it to their peers.

While the current study provided some interesting insight on job search behaviors and attitudes among graduate students, the impact of a brief training, and differences in networking strategy preferences for extraverts and introverts, the small sample size limited the conclusions that could be inferred from the results. However, the research study provided an opportunity to apply previous research in this area to a unique population, namely graduate-level students. In addition, the current study took the research in this area one step further by introducing a training intervention, which provided preliminary information on the impact brief workshops might have on job search behaviors and attitudes.
