The purpose of this research was to understand the lived experience of young adults' sense of belonging in communities of faith. Previously published literature highlights the significance of sense of belonging as necessary for creating a sense of community, the importance of sense of belonging on individual mental and physical health, and the role of faith communities in civic engagement. The central research question guiding this investigation was: What is the experience of young adults' belonging in faith communities? The philosophical basis and methodological process for this study was descriptive phenomenology. In-depth interviews were conducted with 8 men and women from various Christian faith communities. Their ages ranged from 20 to 27 years. These participants described experiences in their faith communities in which they felt a sense of belonging. Detailed themes emerged from the interviews. Elements of belonging in a faith community were experienced in the following ways: A sense of belonging in a faith community (1) comes out of having a place to be spiritual, to transcend, and to become vertically oriented; (2) is found in sharing one's faith with others and building relationships with a variety of people; (3) is experienced as finding a home, a place of comfort, familiarity, and safety, a refuge from the past and present of daily life; (4) is experienced as feeling valued which includes being recognized and remembered, being encouraged to become involved in community activities, and being missed when not present; and (5) is experienced as embracing all aspects of identity without fear of rejection and finding a community that believes in nurturing all aspects of self. Implications of the findings are discussed.
