Thesis (Ed.D.)--Spalding University, 2007.
This ethnographic qualitative study was conducted to ascertain the primary and secondary reasons for which women, after rearing their children, enter religious life. The Sister Moms Organization, consisting of 125 members affiliated with 98 religious congregations and located in five countries, was the source of this information. Sixty-one percent (76 members) of the membership responded to the questionnaire for this study. The majority of these respondents identified their primary reason for entering religious life as responding to a call from God. The four secondary reasons were more difficult to identify. The greatest difficulty of religious life as experienced by the Sister Moms was balancing and/or blending family and community. The most common reason for remaining in religious life was the aspect of community living; the most common reason for leaving would be if religious life became a burden or if they felt they were mistreated. The Sister Moms identified two areas as being the most fulfilling: the love and acceptance they experience from other members of their community and their spiritual way of life. Although children in need might cause some Sister Moms to leave, the majority of their children have responded positively to the choice their mother has made for a second career.Subjects--Topical Terms:
