Thesis (M.A.E.)--Pacific Lutheran University, 2007.
The purpose of this inquiry was to understand how arts impact the retention, interest, and classroom behavior of students in specific subject areas when art integration is used. This qualitative case study consisted of twenty-three students and six teacher participants and the data comprised of field notes, surveys, and interviews. Data was analyzed by grouping notes to search for emerging themes, highlighting similarities among survey and interview responses. Findings suggest that (1) art integration increased student engagement and learning, and (2) classroom behaviors improved for some students but worsened in others. Recommendations for further research include broadening the participant base to see the impact of art on a wider variety of students. Implications of the study show that art could be used more effectively in schools as a tool to teach through, and increase student learning.
