Adolescents transitioning from elementary to middle school are faced with physical and social transformations that can affect their attitudes and perceptions about the move to a new school. Faced with new class schedules, changes in teachers, and the new school environment during the transition may cause various stressors to surface for some of these teen-agers. The purpose of this study was to look at student perceptions about the middle school transition and the types of stressors experienced the most by these students before and after the transition program. This mixed method study was conducted to better understand how 150 sixth grade students perceived the transition to the middle school. The students expressed their thoughts and feelings through four sources of triangulated data. The data sources included student artworks, student writing, completion of a survey and focus group interviews. Both constant comparative method and chi-square analysis were used to analyze the findings and discover differences between gender, ethnicity, special education and regular education students and low socioeconomic status and regular status students. Student art as a research tool was explored in this study also.

Overall, the study's results found students felt neutral about the transition to middle school. Their main stressors were the anticipated academic aspects of middle school. The implications for the current elementary transition program include both student voice and parent involvement in future transition programs. In addition, a written plan for the transition program that includes expected outcomes and increased involvement with middle school administrators, teachers, students and parents is suggested.
