The purpose of this research was to study attitudes of visual arts faculty and college administrators from sixteen private Wisconsin liberal arts colleges towards involvement in a visual arts consortium. The study focused on educator's attitudes, since attitudes are influential factors in determining future directions and strategies for educational improvement. Responses among participants to survey questions were analyzed to determine statistically significant differences.

The survey assessed levels of interest in consortia and observed shared needs among art departments by demographic variables. Questions included attitudes towards acquiring benefits and in working through conflicts. Interviews allowed selected participants to discuss attitudes more directly, and to expand upon survey results.

Mean results of survey responses suggested interest by faculty and administration in a visual arts consortium. Survey participants indicated a recognition of shared needs, a belief in the need for strengthening visual arts education, an interest in obtaining consortium benefits and in working through conflicts, and in the administration of cooperative programs.

Respondents expressed the need for strengthening visual arts education by: (1) equipping students with professional skills and knowledge, (2) providing education for the emerging population of diverse ethnic groups, mid-career students, senior adults, and students with disabilities, (3) implementing appropriate technologies for effective communication systems and art processes, (4) providing institutional encouragement and acknowledgement of faculty research, and (5) improving planning and decision making processes.

Most highly favored consortium benefits of faculty and administrators included access to a faculty network and increased exposure to students. Major conflicts were financial concerns and time constraints. Based on findings of the study, it is clear that educational needs should be addressed for continued effectiveness in visual arts education. A visual arts consortium may be a positive vehicle for educational improvement, offering benefits to a college that would be difficult to achieve singularly.
