The Trinidad Carnival is a folk festival which encompasses both the visual and performing arts. Although not thought of as a high art form, the Carnival produces a burst of creative expression that produces artifacts which express ideas reflective of the experiences of a multiethnic society.

Schools often do not recognize that the making of festival is a rich learning environment and view the Carnival as having a negative impact on students. Issues of cultural struggle create ambivalence, conflict, and tension as students attempt to cope with an educational system designed to homogenize the several races living on the island. The education system stresses achievement through competitive examination, a system which does not encourage creativity, or address the issues of ethnic and cultural diversity. Thus cultural events, like the Carnival are inadequately used as resource material for curriculum.

This study explored cultural conflict between school art and the Trinidad Carnival. It examined how students' presence in the masking camps affected their sense of identity and what meanings they took from their engagement in masking. Students were observed in art classes and constructing costumes in masking camps.

The study data suggested that students' activities in masking validated their knowledge and nurtured a sense of identity, meaning and purpose. They developed confidence through Carnival constructions and acquired design skills from positive experiences within an accepting community environment. In contrast, students' creative experiences in school were restrained by inadequate teaching, minimal supplies, and formal classroom structure.

Symbolic creative work (Willis, 1990) of Carnival provided students a means to achieve adult status. How students constructed identity, personified and reflected, through cultural negotiations, helped them confirm and renegotiate personal and community relationships. It was concluded that cultural events such as the Trinidad Carnival are a rich resource of meaningful information. Educators should examine cultural events and extract from the concepts and artifacts appropriate curricular materials which address the knowledge with which students identify.
