To address the question, is the study of collections and collecting valuable for teaching art and a viable resource for art making, collecting practices of a middle school art teacher and her seventh grade students were examined.

A conceptual model was developed based on a literature review of research associated with the nature of collecting and collections This research was designed as a case study and qualitative methods were used to collect, analyze, and interpret the data which consisted of interviews, field observations, photographs, and other collateral documents. The original conceptual model was revised and an additional category was included about students' and their teacher's responses about their collecting practices. In this model, collecting was viewed as an artistic practice and visual form of research used by artists, art teachers, and student collectors. This finding had not been found in previous research and is significant for art educators.

It was concluded that study of students' personal collections has potential to promote an exploration and understanding of self-identity and artistic practices. Art curriculum studies also could be extended beyond personal collections and include family collections, artists and their collections, museum collecting and curatorial practice, aesthetic issues, and historical and contemporary investigations about how and why objects become valuable.
