Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Chicago, 2006.
This dissertation seeks to add to both the theoretical and empirical literature on the relationship between environment and coping by studying the ways situational contexts influenced the experience of coping with daily life problems in a group of African American, urban, low-income women. Specifically, this research takes Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman's (1984) theory of coping beyond its traditional psychological focus, which is the cognitive appraisal process. Instead, it emphasizes how an individual's external environment contributes to both daily stress and coping efforts.

This mixed-method study was a pilot project undertaken to explore how context contributes to feelings of stress and the ways women coped with it. Eight participants in Chicago were interviewed about their experiences of stress and coping strategies in daily life.

In order to capture participants' in-the-moment responses, the Experience Sampling Method (ESM) (developed by Csikszentmihalyi, Larson, & Prescott, 1977) was adapted to the needs of this sample. Instead of relying on participants to keep daily journals (as in the standard ESM procedure), they were contacted on cell phones four times a day, every day for five days, and asked about stressful experiences as they were happening or soon after they had happened. The 152 participant interviews then were analyzed using a content analysis approach.

Results of this study demonstrated that the situational context could affect the primary-appraisal process (i.e., the identification of whether and to what extent a situational encounter is stressful), the secondary-appraisal process (i.e., the assessment of what resources can be marshaled to manage the situation), and efforts to cope with the situation appraised as stressful. When dealing with these contextual events, women utilized emotion-focused forms of coping (directed towards moderating the emotions connected to the stressful situation) and problem-focused forms of coping (directed toward changing the stressful situation by engaging in proactive behaviors) with equal frequency.
