Contrary to the widely held theory that the funeral legislation of Solon was constructed to rein in funeral ritual because of its ability to cause disruption in the polis, this study puts forward that funeral ritual addressed disruption rather than caused it. Funeral ritual was important to the polis because through its performance the citizens of the polis were able to deal with the disruption caused by death. Thus, the results of traditional funeral ritual corresponded with Solon's goal of establishing eunomia and its principles of balance and good order. In his poetry, Solon supports the concepts behind funeral ritual, understanding that a good end to life included the respect and honour of peers, partly evidenced in the performance of funeral ritual. It is critical to understand the motivation for Solon's funeral legislation within the context of his other laws, his reforms, and his poetry. This context reveals that the funeral laws do not represent an objection to ritual but rather a movement to promote the values of eunomia within the polis. They were aimed at limiting destructive self-interest and fostering responsibility toward the community.
