Further research is needed on adolescents' perceptions of motherhood before and after they are faced with a pregnancy resolution decision. Longitudinal studies are needed to examine how expectations of motherhood change over time.

I undertook this research to examine the expectations of motherhood held by Black pregnant and parenting adolescents and young mothers. I determined that viewing adolescent parenthood as adolescents themselves do would lend insight to the whole phenomenon of adolescent pregnancy and childbearing.

My sample consisted of 37 young Black women aged 14 to 22: 13 pregnant adolescents, 15 adolescent parents, and 9 young mothers. Participation was restricted to Black female adolescents who were pregnant or parenting and young mothers who were parenting children they bore as adolescents. It was mandatory that all participants be attending or have completed high school.

I obtained this population from five social service agencies. I used a semistructured procedure guide and tape recorded interviews. Transcriptions, from the interviews, provided the data basis from which I began to organize and group information. Categories evolved from this process.

Several significant findings emerged. My respondents gave considerable thought to the decision in favor of motherhood. Although in most cases they did not plan to become pregnant, they did plan to remain pregnant, deliver and raise their children. All of these young women stated concern for raising their children "properly" and being "good" mothers. There was a certain "bittersweetness" surrounding their preceptions of motherhood. They loved their babies and wanted to do right by them but they acknowledged that they had assumed a lifetime responsibility. They did not see their babies as dolls. They stated that they knew they would have to get up at night for feedings, care for cranky babies, and make personal sacrifices so their babies would have what they needed.

I attempted with this inquiry to look closely at the adolescent behind the statistics surrounding adolescent pregnancy. I found that these young women were able to carry on without experiencing a "crisis." And although they would not plan to be early childbearers, if they could relive their lives, they genuinely loved their babies.
