This project presents an overview of literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to Shakespeare's history plays with the purpose of investigating literature which is concerned with defining and understanding the characteristics and attributes that best describe a capable sovereign, whose rule results in order and stability. By examining the writings of such a broad span of time, the reader can begin to recognize patterns in the English writers understanding of just which kinds of characteristics, attitudes, and beliefs most likely can be ascribed to a good ruler under which the community will flourish and thrive; but this leadership literature also serves as a warning against certain other attributes that necessarily result in a tyrannical monarch whose reign is fraught with loss, death, and instability for his subjects. The discourse of leadership in early English writings is not addressed to the leader alone, but to the entire nation eager to engage in this dialogue. By allowing a nation to begin to create a cohesive understanding of a moral, ethical, and effective leader these writings define Englishness and, eventually, the British nation.

Not only do many good rulers reflect such strong qualities as loyalty, bravery and level-headedness, but they also understand that order is best established by selflessly serving the welfare of the nation through an appreciation of societal norms such as respect of religion, morality, and the bonds of kinship. All of these elements point to a leader who gains power, and by caring for the people and earning their respect through that care, the leader maintains the power with the help of loyal subjects. On the other hand the ruler who is self-serving, and disregards societal boundaries of acceptable behavior in terms of respect for God and family is certainly a tyrant, and a tyrant can never lead the people to a place of order, peace, or stability, but only causes loss, suffering, and fear throughout the nation. Examining literature such as the chronicles of English history, poetry and drama from the Anglo-Saxons to the Early Modern period provides a recognizable prototype of effective leadership while providing a wealth of perspectives from which to draw some conclusions about these writers' understanding of an effective leader.
