This descriptive research project examined the mental health challenges of African American women who are living with HIV/AIDS. The sample consisted of ten HIV/AIDS infected African American women currently receiving mental health services in Long Beach, California. The study also explored their coping mechanisms during the stages of the HIV disease prognosis, progression, late stage illness, as well as their changing family dynamic.

Findings indicated that HIV/AIDS infected African American women who are exposed to mental health resources having cultural, social, and clinically competent programs and professional staff reported a greater usage and increased satisfaction of mental health services. As a result culturally sensitive and culturally appropriate programs and counseling may reduce the challenges of mental health experienced by African American HIV/AIDS infected women.
