The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a risk and resiliency-based intervention on the aggressive classroom behaviors exhibited by African American first grade boys who were victims of early exposure to family violence. A 28-day study utilizing an Applied Behavior Analysis across subjects design was facilitated to determine if there was a functional relationship between the intervention and a decrease in the frequency and intensity of verbal and physical aggression.

The treatment was based on risk and resiliency research and addressed specific risk factors experienced by the children such as family violence and the effects of the exposure to violence, i.e., aggression towards peers and adults. The treatment conditions consisted of seven lessons which built resiliency by strengthening the children's prosocial skills. These targeted the delayed areas of language and communication often experienced by children growing up in traumatic environments.

Daily observations were made of three subjects during a baseline and treatment phase. These subjects were matched for age, gender, race, economic status, risk factor, and behavior scores utilizing a standardized instrument. Major findings were as follows: (1) The mean frequency of verbal aggressive behaviors decreased for all subjects during the risk and resiliency intervention. (2) The mean frequency of physical aggressive behaviors decreased for all subjects during the risk and resiliency intervention. (3) The proportion of the highest intensity verbal aggressive behaviors decreased for all three subjects during the risk and resiliency intervention. (4) The proportion of lowest intensity verbal aggressive behaviors increased for all three subjects during the risk and resiliency intervention. (5) The proportion of highest intensity physical aggressive behaviors decreased for two out of three subjects during the risk and resiliency intervention. (6) The proportion of lowest intensity physical aggressive behaviors also decreased for two out of three subjects during the risk and resiliency intervention. (7) The proportion of high intensity (physical) aggressive behaviors to lower intensity (verbal) aggressive behaviors decreased for all three subjects during the risk and resiliency intervention.
