Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2003.
The purpose of the study was to investigate two- and three-year-old children's voluntary modeling activity and, by describing children's activities in which they are engaged, to understand their interests, needs, and abilities in modeling. The reasons for studying two- and three-year-old children's voluntary modeling activity are (a) due to the emerging interest in the use of plastic media such as clay or play-dough in the field of early childhood education, and (b) due to the poor description and lack of availability of resources concerning two- and three-year-old children's voluntary modeling activity. There seems to be a need to provide references that give sufficient information to teachers and art educators upon which they can encourage meaningful modeling experiences for two- and three-year-old children.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Through investigating three two- and three-year-old children's voluntary modeling activity, the study defines exploration and formation activity that occurred and developed through self-initiated and socially constructive ways, as did children's interest in modeling. Children also showed interest in acquiring the skills needed in modeling and understanding the properties of the medium.

The study suggests that two- and three-year-old children's voluntary modeling activity is a far more complex and sophisticated experience than previously understood. This experience in modeling is believed to be encouraged when children are frequently exposed to modeling material, to be able to explore and manipulate freely, and to be able to continuously develop and build knowledge, skills, and ideas needed in modeling.
