The research involved 107 students enrolled in art during the fall semester of 1996-1997. The course of study for the semester was planned with the use of seven chapters from the textbook, Understanding Art. Eight different art lessons were selected to give students the opportunity to produce eight different art projects for their art portfolio. This quasi-experimental study was done in the researcher's normal classroom environment without the use of experimental or control groups. All of the participants were exposed to the same art program and instruction.

Analysis of the data revealed that a significant change occurred in the students' vocabulary development from 4 percent known vocabulary on the pre-test to a 51 percent vocabulary on the post-test. Also, an increase of vocabulary usage was noticeable between the pre-art critique and the post-art critique. Other factors which were considered in the study were the evaluation by the teacher of the students' art portfolios and the daily journals. The average grade for the art portfolios was 85 and 87 for the daily journal.
