One of the major concerns in the field of higher education is the effectiveness of the college admission system. For about half a century, Taiwanese high school students who want to enter art-related programs in higher education, have to take two national admission tests—The Joint College Entrance Examination (JCEE) to measure their academic achievement, and The JCEE Art-Skill Test to measure their art making abilities. The students' combined scores on the two exams decide whether they can enroll in an art-related program. However, it is unknown if high school students' scores on both of these exams are valid predictors of their college academic performance.

This study investigated the relationship between the scores arts and crafts education students at Taiwanese teacher colleges received on The Joint College Entrance Examination and The JCEE Art-Skill Test, and their college academic achievements. In addition to the JCEE scores, gender and high school background were other factors examined in this study.

This study looked specifically at the relationship between the subjects' JCEE scores and their college GPAs; the differences in the JCEE scores and college GPAs based on high school background, and gender; the influence of different sets of prediction variables—gender and high school type, and selected sets from JCEE variables—on college GPAs; the influence of gender on the prediction validity of high school type and JCEE scores to college GPAs; and the relationship between the subjects' JCEE art-skill scores and their first year art-skill course grades in college.

Inferential statistical analysis was employed as the research design of this study. The Pearson Product-Moment Coefficient, Independent two sample t-test, and linear multiple regression were the statistical methods employed to answer the different research questions.

The results of this study imply that the subjects' academic JCEE scores had more association with their college GPAs than their art-skill scores. Based on the research results, suggestions have been offered for improving the admission policies of arts and crafts education programs at teacher colleges in Taiwan.
