This dissertation documents the lives and performance careers of Delores Browne and Raven Wilkinson—African American ballerinas of the 1950s and 1960s whose dance careers extended to the mid-1980s. Delores Browne was a principal dancer with the New York Negro Ballet, a short-lived African American company from 1956–1959. Raven Wilkinson performed with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, one of the most renowned ballet companies in America until 1962. The research examines these women experiences in ballet companies at a time in history when blacks had not achieved full equality as American citizens. The research also includes an examination of African American ballet companies, individual dancers and dance academies from that time period and racial categorization within American society as it relates to the ballet world.

Information on Ms. Browne and Ms. Wilkinson was primarily collected utilizing oral history methodology. The general mode of inquiry of this research is postpositivist endeavoring to understand and interpret a particular research context. The dissertation specifically utilizes a womanist worldview as a mode of inquiry for knowing and analyzing the information collected. Patricia Hill Collins’ matrix of domination is adapted as an analytic paradigm to examine Delores Browne's and Raven Wilkinson's&dotbelow; experiences. As a former member of the Dance Theatre of Harlem, a predominantly black ballet company, the author provides an emic perspective.

The research demonstrates that because racism existed in the American ballet world, as well as sexism and classism, these women's achievements were scarcely recognized. Racism limited their growth as ballerinas. Finally, the research discusses how black women continue to struggle in ballet because of inaccurate and incomplete perceptions of black women. The small number of black ballet dancers is directly attributed to an American society that attaches little significance to the arts, and specifically to dance. The inability of anti-discrimination laws to compel the American ballet companies to hire more than required “token” personnel in their companies is also part of the problem. The intent of this research is to document the lives of Delores Browne and Raven Wilkinson to provide information to further dialogue and to bring about change.
