Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 2001.
AfriChristian Spirituality is the method through which Africans in America can process the events of everyday life, personal, cultural, and socio-political situations. This way of being is not only an expression of innate and inherited Africanisms, but also a strong indication of the influence of Christian teachings. Built on the premise that both the African and Christian components have a common element, which is spirit, a discussion of AfriChristian Spirituality is best carried out by considering the characteristics of spirit. The necessity for African Americans to define and embrace AfriChristian Spirituality is made clear by examining instances of both success and failure at doing so. Four key aspects of AfriChristian Spirituality are time, the essence of spirit; prophecy through dreams and visions, the realm of spirit; music, the display of spirit; and salvation and redemption, the work of spirit.

This dissertation defines AfriChristian Spirituality by describing its characteristics in common or familiar terms—time, prophecy (through dreams and visions), music, and salvation through rituals of redemption. Each term is then assigned an attribute that is used to show its relevance as a spiritual concept. Consideration is given to the way in which Wilson's plays draw on these elements and illustrate the influence of AfriChristian Spirituality in the lives of the characters. By examining the varying levels of success Wilson's characters achieve at incorporating AfriChristian Spirituality into their lives, its importance as a source of strength as well as a foundation upon which African Americans can create self-sustaining and positive identities is proven. As archetypes for African Americans, Wilson's characters, through their success or failure at doing so, illustrate the truth that responsibility for discovering and incorporating AfriChristian Spirituality into their individual and collective reality is theirs alone. Six of Wilson's plays are used in this discussion of AfriChristian Spirituality, and the through-line for the dissertation will be Joe Turner's Come and Gone.
