Thesis (M.Ed.)--The University of Regina (Canada), 2000.
This qualitative study examines the experiences of eight individuals who participated in a gallery education program involving two inner city schools and an urban art gallery. The exhibition that provided the context for the program included the work of four contemporary Aboriginal artists who each created an art work in response to a 1939 mural depicting a meeting on the west coast of Canada between European explorer Captain Vancouver, two sailors and three First Nations people. The mural is a controversial and highly stylized painting that many people consider a racist interpretation of first contact. The participants in the study, through a narrative inquiry, describe the educational program as they experienced it from the perspective of student, teacher, in-school administrator, and gallery educator. The author of this study views the event from the perspective of a provincial curriculum developer.
