This study argues that painting increases the physical and psychological healing of children and adolescents with disabilities and special needs. It examines the meaning of healing in this context by analyzing the properties of art and its historical role in human life. In order to support this argument the study draws from the literature of art therapy, art history, psychology, and medicine.

The research for this dissertation was conducted at the Harlem Horizon Art Studio (HHAS) at the Harlem Hospital Center, a unique setting whose procedures do not conform to common notions of art therapy. Rather, at HHAS the making of art is conceived as healing in and of itself. It is argued that the difference between the latter method and art therapy lays in fundamental views about illness itself.

The social issues of living in Harlem are also explored in this study. Poverty, drugs, violence, and unstable family structure were found to contribute to the stress of living with a disability. In contrast, HHAS provides a safe and encouraging family-like environment.

Three boys ranging in ages from 11 to 16 are the subjects for the case studies. They were visited in their homes and schools in order to discover how HHAS impacted their daily lives. Physical, emotional, and psychological changes were charted as painting became an important activity for them.

Finally, it is argued that a new definition is needed to describe a process of making art that is therapeutic but not driven by psychological theory as characteristic of art therapy. The dissertation led to the framing of a new paradigm named “whole art” whose characteristics include inner-directedness, determination, and focus. It is the contention of the dissertation that the effectiveness of “whole art” lies in the impartial encouragement of children's artistic vision through the internal development of these characteristics.
