This dissertation presents Alfred Lichtwark (1852–1914) and his work in art and museum education. The methodology of this dissertation is chiefly biographical, exploring Lichtwark's life and work as the Director of the Kunsthalle (Art Museum) in Hamburg from 1886 to 1914. The core of the dissertation is the presentation of English translations of two of Lichtwark's most important works. The first is “Art in School,” a speech he gave in 1887 outlining his plans for the art museum. The second translation is an excerpt from Exercises in the Contemplation of Art, a transcript of Lichtwark teaching his students in the Kunsthalle.

In this dissertation, I argue that Alfred Lichtwark has contributed to the foundation of art education theory and practice in North America. Many American researchers in the history of art education have stated his importance, and regret that more information is not available about him in the English language. In this paper, I seek to redress that dearth of knowledge by presenting the core of Lichtwark's philosophy in English-language translations of his work.

In brief, Lichtwark believed that the German schools emphasized knowing facts about art at the expense of understanding how to look at and appreciate art. Lichtwark made it his life's work to change the German educational philosophy and system, and therefore to change the Germans themselves.

I explore Lichtwark's historical context to better assess the value of his contributions to the field of art and museum education. I then present the translations of Lichtwark's work, followed by discussion and analysis. To conclude the dissertation, I describe 20<super>th</super> century ideas and practices parallel to or analogous with Lichtwark's, make suggestions for further research on Lichtwark and other influential Germanic art educators, and illuminate Lichtwark's contributions to contemporary art and museum education.
