Gerberding, Paul William.
Reconnecting art and nature.
- 197 p.
Adviser: Virginia Jenkins.
Thesis (M.A.)--University of Northern Colorado, 2001.
The ancient ones were very aware of the interdependence of all life forms and the interrelationship of all the awesome workings in nature. The web of life, and the links between the cosmos and the Earth, were not natural phenomena to be studied, but the very fabric of the culture. Ancestral art, from every corner of the globe, resounds with a common affinity and identity with the great outdoors.

This outdoor aesthetic has been reawakened in modern times in the wake of a rapidly deteriorating environment. It has been made manifest in many of the contemporary areas of human activity, including the visual arts and education. Teachers intent on promoting responsible stewardship of the environment are making the outdoors their classrooms. A curriculum of standards-based outdoor art activities cultivates a greater awareness and understanding of natural phenomena, and promotes a profound respect for the environment.
